Every year NIE programs look for new and fresh materials for Black History Month, and this in-paper/Web series is fresher than even the newest supplements. It is written live for the five weeks of February and connects current events to the history and themes of Black History Month. This year Hollister Kids again offers this five-week live series as a FREE bonus to any NIE program that buys Hollister's Living Black History tab or another of our Black History offerings after June 1, 2008. The feature is sent by email the week prior to publication each week.
In a 500-word story each week, the series tackles a top issue important to African Americans or profiles an African American making news through leadership or achievement. To spark discussion and further learning, each installment includes a follow-up question that can also be used as a writing or discussion prompt, and activities that explore the week’s topic in the pages of the daily newspaper. In addition to linking the present with the past, this series reminds readers — and teaches students — that newspapers provide a living history of life in the nation and the community every day. This feature is available in half-page broadsheet format, color or black and white, 50“ or 54” or as an online feature for use with Web sites. Regular subscribers to Hollister’s “Newspaper PLUS” feature automatically receive this special Black History Month material.
Sample Newspaper Activity
Opportunities in movies are greater for African Americans now than they were in the past. Scan the movie ads in today’s newspaper. See which actors and actresses are listed for roles in movies that are advertised. Log how many are African Americans and compare the results to the total number of actors/actresses as a bar graph. Finish by writing a short newspaper editorial assessing how Oscar awards won by Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Halle Berry will increase opportunities for African American actors and actresses in the future.
