Everyone likes to know the news in their community. This tab teaches young children how to recognize news in their neighborhoods. Then it shows them how to write that news for a classroom newspaper or newsletter. Centerspread is a map for charting people, places and issues making news. Teachers Guide also available.
Sample Newspaper Activity
In the newspaper find a photo of a person who interests you. To what groups or communities does the person belong (stretch your thinking)? Write a description of what the person is doing in the photo, including details of what he/she looks like, is wearing, etc.
Sponsor Suggestion
Neighborhood and community organizations, fraternal and civic groups, Rotary or Jaycees, business organizations, community newspapers, literacy groups, local journalism groups.
