The Character of America is revealed in the way individuals, communities and the nation as a whole respond to challenges. This exciting character education supplement uses incidents from U.S. history to explore key character traits. As students read, they are asked to list the character traits displayed in each incident and to relate those traits to their own lives, and to people making news today.

Sample Newspaper Activity
Jimmy Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize speech stated that the “goals of society are peace, freedom, human rights, environmental quality, the alleviation of suffering and the rule of law.” In teams, find an example involving each of these issues in the newspaper. Write a sentence for each explaining how the news connects with the issue.
